Archive

The archive and library of the Inda Foundation hold over 15,000 items divided into different types of material: books, documents, artworks and administrative records. Due to its historical and artistic significance, on the recommendation of the Regional Archival Superintendency, it was declared of particular historical importance by Decree No. 7/2013 of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities. The archive’s holdings consist mainly of documents, images, sheet music, sketches and stage materials and can be consulted at the Inda headquarters in Palazzo Greco in Syracuse. The archive and library are an important resource for historical studies of open-air theatre, but also a starting point for reflection on the legacy of antiquity in the contemporary world.

Performances

archive of performances from 1914 to the present day

The Library

The Library of the National Institute of Ancient Drama, founded in 1927 and housed in Palazzo Greco in Syracuse, includes a wide range of books and papers relating to the specific field of ancient theatre. The book section ranges from works by ancient theatre authors (Greek and Latin) to essays on classical philology, architecture, archaeology and theatre set design.
The main core consists of a vast collection of volumes, specialised journals, collections and documents produced largely during the staging of Classical Performances at the Greek Theatre in Syracuse or through the intense conference activity carried out over the years by the Institute.
Of particular interest is the section dedicated to Sicily, its archaeological remains, folklore and history, while the periodicals section includes a large and important group of Italian and foreign periodicals relating to both theatre and classical disciplines. Students and scholars conducting research on ancient theatre and the classical world can access the library’s documentary heritage upon request.
