A celebration in the
‘theatre of the sky’

The International Festival of Classical Theatre for Young People in Palazzolo Acreide is the most important theatre festival dedicated to future generations on the national and international scene.
Every year at the Greek Theatre of Akrai, young people of all ages present highly original reinterpretations of classical Greek and Latin texts during an event that makes participation and togetherness one of its strengths. The festival was born from an idea by Giusto Monaco, who in 1991 decided to create an event capable of keeping ‘the relationship with the younger generations alive through the protection of the founding values of classical culture’ . Thus, between 26 and 31 May 1991, students from 26 schools performed at the Greek Theatre of Akrai, giving rise to an event that has now become a regular and increasingly important fixture in the activities of the Inda Foundation, with a high educational and social value.

Until 2000, the Festival was held every two years, but then became an annual event. For a month, students from secondary schools, universities and academies from all over the world take turns performing their own shows and classical performances at the Greek Theatre in Syracuse, which they attend as spectators in a unique combination of youth and classicism. The festival in Palazzolo Acreide thus becomes a guarantee of the INDA Foundation’s commitment to students of all levels, from primary schools to Italian and foreign universities. By increasingly focusing the Festival on young people, INDA fills a gap by offering Greek and Roman tragedy and comedy an area for experimentation, a permanent laboratory that is also an observatory of emotions and conflicts, enriched by side events, musical performances, meetings and opportunities for exchange between students.
Sebastiano Aglianò is responsible for the complex organisational machinery of the International Festival of Classical Theatre for Young People.
