Antigone
9/30 May
1/5 June
by Sofocle
Directed R. Carsen
It is dawn in Thebes, a dawn of victory: the city’s army, led by Oedipus’s son Eteocles, has defeated the army of Argos, led by Polynices, Oedipus’s other son, who came to reclaim the throne. But in a fratricidal conflict, Eteocles and Polynices killed each other, and the throne has now passed to their uncle Creon. As his first act, Creon has decided to grant funeral honors to Eteocles, leaving the body of Polynices, an enemy of the state, unburied. Antigone, his sister, rebels against the edict: she transgresses the law and buries the body. For this, Creon condemns her to be locked forever in a cave: the words of Ismene—Antigone’s sister—and Haemon, Creon’s son and Antigone’s betrothed, are of no avail. But the will of the gods manifests itself, and Creon understands it too late: and so he loses Antigone and Haemon, who die by suicide, and his wife Eurydice, who takes her own life upon hearing of her son’s death.
Alcesti
8/31 May
2/6 June
by Euripide
Directed F. Dini
After being forced to serve in the household of Admetus (king of Pherae in Thessaly) to atone for a sin, the god Apollo persuaded the Fates to grant the man escape death on the condition that another sacrifice himself for him. Only his wife, Alcestis, agreed, and despite Apollo’s efforts, he was unable to save her from Death. And so, Alcestis approached her death, having received from her husband a promise not to replace her with other women. After Alcestis’s death, Heracles also arrived in Pherae: during a break from his labors, the hero asked Admetus for hospitality, which he granted even though he was grieving. From a slave, Heracles learned that the dead woman was Admetus’s wife, and he resolved to face Death and bring Alcestis back to her husband, among the living. After persuading him to unveil the woman, Admetus discovered that she was his wife, who must remain silent for three days before being fully restored to life.
Persiani
13/28 June
by Eschilo
Directed A. Ollè
In Susa, capital of the Persian Empire, the old dignitaries left to rule the kingdom are gripped by anguish: the great king, Xerxes, long ago departed at the head of a massive expedition against Athens and has yet to return. Anxiety over the outcome of the war grows when Atossa, the king’s mother, reports a prophetic dream, one in which she sees her son fallen to the dust at the hands of a filly of Greek origin. Soon, the anguish becomes reality: one of the few survivors arrives in Susa and reports the rout of the Persian army off Salamis—Xerxes’s fleet, too numerous, has been surrounded by Athenian ships, and the Persian army has been massacred. In terror, Atossa and the Chorus summon the soul of Xerxes’s deceased father, Darius, from Hades. Finally, Xerxes himself arrives in Susa: humiliated, his clothes torn, the great king intones the funeral lament for the fallen Persian youths.
