STORY

With this comedy Aristophanes sets out to warn the Athenians of the dangers inherent in
Cleon’s demagogy. With a personification, Aristophanes presents on the scene Demos (the People), old, curmudgeonly and half deaf, completely at the mercy of one of his servants, Paflagone (Cleone), who
it cheats and wrecks him without his noticing.

Two faithful servants, who try in vain to open their master’s eyes, backed by the knights, the only class that still retains moral integrity …
