The Academy of ancient drama is a theatre school that Giusto Monaco and Fernando Balestra supported wholeheartedly, renewing it in 2010. The Academy is one of the high points of the activities proposed every year by the INDA Foundation and one of the most prestigious theatre schools in Italy.
Students who want to do the courses proposed by the two parts of the Academy – the “Giusto Monaco” school of classical theatre and the “Fernando Balestra” for children from 5 years of age and adults who want to find out more about theatre – will have a unique experience that begins with the study of the great classical authors through to contemporary artists. Students of the Academy also take part in the cultural life of the city with open classes, shows and flash-mobs, becoming true ambassadors, not only for the INDA Foundation but also for classical theatre through the tours that they put on all over Italy.
The path towards a debut
at the Greek Theatre
The “Giusto Monaco” classical theatre school places the theory and the practice of classical theatre as the basis of the formation of an actor, giving students the possibility to debut at the Greek theatre of Siracusa during the classical plays. Every year, young people from all over Italy take part in auditions for a place on the three-year courses, thus beginning a process of personal and professional growth. This process sees the students taking part in classes in acting, diction, history of theatre, dance, theatre-dance and stage-fighting. Students also have the opportunity to take part in workshops and labs with directors and actors of national and international fame. This experience culminates in the participation of the young actors in the cycle of classical plays and their debut on the sacred stones of the Greek theatre of Siracusa, in front of thousands of spectators; a first step of great prestige at the beginning of their careers as professional actors.
first steps in the world of theatre
The young people’s part of the Academy has been dedicated to Fernando Balestra, who relaunched it in 2010 and was one of its most passionate supporters. The school is divided into four sections; Junior, Spring, Advanced spring and Senior, giving children from 6 years old and adults the possibility of taking their first steps in the world of theatre to discover an art that has always had an immense capacity to make us think about the world and ourselves.
