1913: The Founding of the scuola siracusana (the traditions of the Tragic Chorus in Syracuse)
On the 4th April 1913 in the hall of the Camera di Commercio in Syracuse, the Count Mario Tommaso Gargallo called the first meeting to discuss the idea of bringing back onto the stage the masterpieces of Classical dramaturgy at the Greek Theatre Syracuse. On the 9th April of the same year the organizing committee for the Cycle of Classical plays was established, presided over by the same Mario Tommaso Gargallo.
The 16th April 1914 the Greek Theatre Syracuse was reopened with the debut of Aeschylus’ Agamemnon. Thus commemoration became creation, thanks to a group of nobles and intellectuals who kept alive the passion for the classic arts and for the City.
Through the documentation which is conserved in the Archive, the Foundation INDA has been able to reconstruct the historical and artistic events of 1913 regarding the origins of INDA and the founding of the scuola siracusana (the traditions of the Tragic Chorus in Syracuse).
The Multimedia Archive for Classical Culture (1913: the founding of the scuola siracusana), which is available online, offers a historical reconstruction through the documents from 1913 and is subdivided in four thematic sections:
